Ins-purr-ation for Cat Lovers

The cat is surprisingly similar to other high-tech devices you may already own.  Like personal digital assistants, it is compact and portable.  Like a home security system, it is capable of functioning autonomously for extended periods without direct human intervention.  But unlike virtually any other product....it is, for the most part, self cleaning.

Ins-purr-ation for Cat Lovers

The kitten has a luxurious, Bohemian, unpuritanical nature.

It eats six meals a day, plays furiously with a toy mouse and a piece of rope, and suddenly falls into a deep sleep whenever the fit takes it.

It never feels the necessity to do anything to justify its existence; it does not want to be a Good Citizen; it has never heard of Service.  It knows that it is beautiful and delightful, and it considers that a sufficient contribution to the general good.

And in return for its beauty and charm it expects fish, meat, and vegetables, a comfortable bed, a chair by the grate fire, and endless petting.

Ins-purr-ation for Cat Lovers

At times, cats can seem like hairy little people.  In times of sickness or sorrow they may wrap your head in their paws, nuzzle your neck, or lick your cheek.  A calm atmosphere is deeply linked to survival.  If you are upset or ill, your cat will do whatever it takes to sooth you, so that his home becomes secure once more.

Of all domestic animals the cat is the most expressive.
His face is capable of showing a wide range of expressions.
His tail is a mirror of his mind.  His gracefulness is surpassed only by his agility.
And, along with all these, he has a sense of humor.

Cats grace us with their affection. . .  When they curl up on your lap, it's because they think you're worth spending time with.  When they climb onto your shoulder, it's because they trust that you will carry them safely.  When they lie across your magazine, it's because they can't believe their best friend would rather look at this flat, boring thing than their sleek, gorgeous, purring selves.

Ins-purr-ation for Cat Lovers

Cats almost always make perfect landings, no matter the height from which they jump or rumble.  The same can't be said for us.  Even if we've covered every contingency, we make errors in judgement.  Work on your next project with wisdom born of humility.

Mom's Not Happy With Me....

Imagine that!  I kept waking her up last night and pestering her.  She didn't like that and called me a "cotton pickin'" cat!

What I was after I eventually got....

I wanted her to fill my feeder back up, change out my water tank with fresh water and clean my litter box.  I guess maybe I should've let her sleep last night and then go after her about it when she woke up this morning.

After all, she did fill up my feeder, replenish my water tank with fresh water and she also changed out the litter in my litter box.

However, we cats operate on the theory that it never hurts to ask for what we want....

Godzilla - Our Houseguest

I was going to post a picture of Godzilla, the turtle who was our houseguest for a few days this week.  However I can't get that done right now.  Anyway, his humans returned around 1:00 AM this morning - their flight was delayed due to bad weather in the Atlanta area - and they left around 7:00 AM or so.  Godzilla went home with them.

Our housemate will be heading over to where his humans live tomorrow some time - as her eldest grandson graduates high school and she most certainly wants to be there for that.

Godzilla was no trouble - but mom wouldn't let me near him.  I don't know why - I would've liked to have seen him instead of just pictures of him.  Oh well....

The carriage of the tail is often a clue to how your cat is feeling.  A tail held high is jaunty, enthusiastic or playful.  A tail between the legs or wrapped very tightly around the ankles indicates fear....  A cat uses his tail for balance when he leaps.  He can also use it to control nervousness and excitement by swinging or lashing the tail as an outlet for tension or to drain off excess energy.

How to Train a Human

http://archive.mail-list.com/petwarmers/message/20110316.134804.39b4afbe.en.html

When you first acquire your human family, it a big help if you
are a cute little puppy.  (Not that you can't train them once you reach
doghood, but it takes longer.  They expect more from an adult.)

Humans train easier if you give them lots of big ole sloppy kisses
to reward them when they get something right.

When I arrived at my forever home, I was a cutie, weighing in at
two pounds at eight weeks old.  A little Rat Terrier, brown and white
spotted like a Pinto pony, plus giving lots of kisses to everyone --it
made me an attractive package.

Once you have gotten this far, and won their trust, the next step
is in basic training.

Stormy Night

It was a stormy night last night here in Central Mississippi.  Our housemate kept bringing Rusty in and out of her bedroom - she was stashing him in her bathroom because he's afraid of thunder and lightning.  One time I was in the hallway when she opened the door to bring him in and it was like oops!!  He's big and so I'm afraid of him.  I went scurrying back into Mom's bedroom even though he didn't try to come after me [he was on a leash] and it was a little while before I would come out from under the bed.  Mom was in bed reading.  I figured with her in there doing that, I was safe from him, so I joined her in the bed.  She petted me and reassured me that I was safe and that she loves me.

It stormed pretty much all night - thunder and lightning and heavy rain.  Mom wore our housemate's daughter's "duck shoes" to work today due to all the rain.  She said the garage had flooded again.  Our housemate wasn't amused by that!  Fortunately, the stormy weather seems to be out of here for a few days.

Rusty and the Brownies

Yesterday that retriever we live with, Rusty, took a notion to get into the brownies our housemate had baked Saturday night.  She and Mom had left them in the pan on the kitchen counter covered with tin foil.  After eating lunch, Mom came back to our bedroom and joined me.

She had a bad headache and so she laid down and took a long nap and woke up feeling better, but not completely over the headache.  When she went back out to the kitchen, she found our housemate in there and she told Mom that Rusty had tried to get into the brownies.  She had been on the couch in the den watching TV, reading the newspaper and half dozing off when she heard a noise in the kitchen and got up to check it out.

She found Rusty with the tin foil off of the pan and in his mouth.  He hadn't gotten into the brownies themselves - thank goodness!  She got the tin foil away from him and threw it away then covered the pan with Saran wrap and relocated the brownies to on top of the stove at the back where Rusty wouldn't be able to reach them.

Fortunately no harm - no foul.  Mom says that chocolate isn't good for doggies and for kitties - she won't let me have any.

Ins-purr-ation for Cat Lovers

If the pull of the outside world is strong, there is also a pull toward the human.  The cat may disappear on its own errands, but sooner or later, it returns once again for a little while, to greet us with its own type of love.                                                                                                                      -- Lloyd Alexander

Ins-purr-ation for Cat Lovers

If purring could be encapsulated, it would be the most powerful antidepressant in the pharmaceutical market. - Alexis F. Hope

Thursday Morning

This morning about 2:00 AM I woke mom up – I was pawing at her and tagged her on her right thumb with one of my claws.  It’s a little sore, but not too bad – she can deal with it.  She doesn’t know why I was pawing at her to wake her up.  I didn’t want anything!

Places to look: behind the books in the bookshelf, any cupboard with a gap too small for any cat to squeeze through, the top of anything sheer, under anything too low for a cat to squash under, and inside the piano.  - Roseanne Ambrose Brown

Tails are wagging in Baton Rouge. The East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control and Rescue Center recently released statistics that show the rate of animal adoption is up and euthanasia has gone down. According to a news release from Animal Control, 1,766 animals were adopted in 2010, up from 1,514 in 2009.

Ins-purr-ation for Cat Lovers

"Cats," observed American author Joseph Wood Krutch, "seem to go on the principle that it never does any harm to ask for what you want."

Biblical author James said, You don't have what you want because you don't ask God for it".  [James 4:2-3 NLT]

One Smart Cat

I am one smart cat.  Saturday night I went "missing".  Mom found me - in her bathroom sitting up on the counter next to the sink!  She looked and sure enough, my water tank was empty.  That's what I wanted to tell her!  She  got the message and took it off the bowl and went to the kitchen to fill it [it's easier to fill it in there] and brought it back and put it back on the bowl.  I jumped down and made a beeline over there and got myself a good drink!

Mom Sat On My Tail!!

Mom is finally letting me access the blog for the first time in about a week or so.  I've got something to report.  Mom found it funny, but I didn't....

Mom went to change clothes and something happened....

I was in the bathroom with Mom.  I had angled myself at my feeder so that when Mom raised the lid on the toilet, my tail wound up draped across the seat.  Well, Mom didn't realize this and sat down on the toilet and sat on my tail!.  I screeched and yowled, then Mom raised up and I removed my tail and indignantly left the room!  It took a little while but I finally came back around Mom and let her pet me and - yes - apologize to me for sitting on my tail!

Out of the sack, cat! Sleeping with pets carries disease risk

I don't agree with this and Mom doesn't either....

Mom Was Surprised Overnight!

She woke up during the night, got up and took care of something, then went back to bed and back to sleep.  When she got up, she found me laying next to her but not curled up – I was on my back like a baby!   She would’ve liked to have gotten a picture of that, but knew she couldn’t get her camera without disrupting the moment.

This Evening

Mom did something very bad.  She grabbed me and took me out in the den and showed me the big doggie.  He was out on the patio but he was barking and he was loud.  It scared me and when Mom put me down, I made a beeline back here to our bedroom.  I went up under the bed because I thought that the doggie might come after me.

I gave Mom grief for a couple of hours - I stayed under the bed for most of that time and ignored her.  I wanted her to feel bad for doing this to me.  She did - she really tried to make up with me and I let her feel bad for a while then when I figured she had suffered long enough, I finally came out and let her make up.  She has been careful around me since then.

I'm Back....

Mom's letting me on the computer this evening.  I have a few comments to make....

Friday night Mom watched our LSU Tigers play in the Cotton Bowl.  We were both very happy with the outcome as LSU won over Texas A&M 41-24.  Mom was up till nearly midnight.

Our housemate's daughter came in to visit.  She was running in the Mississippi Blues Marathon on Saturday.  She only stayed overnight - she left Saturday afternoon.  It was something to do with some bad weather that was expected.

Today Mom and our housemate didn't attend church after they got ready to go.  It seems that there has been some bad weather in the area although I really haven't noticed.  Mom got some pictures of some ice, I thought I'd share one with you.

This is a shot of a hollyberry bush out in front of our house.  The leaves have ice on them.  Mom says it's cold outside - she says it's 30 degrees with a wind chill of 19.  I haven't noticed, I'm nice and toasty warm in here.

Hello Again!

Mom has let me get on the computer this afternoon so I can write a little.  Today is her day off from work.  I woke her up around 6:00 this morning and she decided to go ahead and get up sometime after 7:00 since she couldn't go back to sleep.  She did her devotional and Bible reading - I let her alone while she did that.  Then she got up and went and had breakfast.  She got in the rain closet for several minutes and then got out and put some clothes on.  I'm glad we cats don't have to wear clothes - they're a lot of trouble as they have to be washed every so often.

Mom got ready and went out - I don't know where she went, but when she came back, she had some bags of stuff with.  But, all she did was drop that off, grab something out of her camera and then leave again.  Eventually she came back and she had another bag with her.  She left it here in the bedroom too and disappeared for a few minutes.

Then she grabbed my restroom and went somewhere with it.  I don't know where she took it, but when she came back with it, it had been cleaned and had fresh litter.  Thanks Mom!  Then she grabbed the 2 baskets with those dirty human clothes in them and I'm guessing she went and washed them because later on she brought them back and some of them were on hangers and she put them in the closet.

Later on she and I took a nap.  You know we cats love to take naps!  I don't know why humans want to take naps, but I let Mom sleep - at least she wasn't hassling me.  When she woke up, she did want to pet me.

I guess this is enough for now....

Mom's Diary & My Notes

Mom has decided to create a diary for herself to post things she wants to talk about and let me have this one to myself.  I'm happy about that!

This morning I was fussing at Mom.  Why?  Because she forgot to feed me!  She soon realized her mistake and corrected it.  I also needed a drink, so she gave me some water.

Now if she would just change out my restroom....

Mom's Pedometer Plan and Today

Our housemate gave Mom a pedometer for Christmas [along with a beautiful sweatshirt].  She's been wearing it for the past several days.  She said she plans to start a new diet on Monday and start walking for exercise again [that's tomorrow Mom!].  She gave me the list of her readings and I think I'm going to share them....

12/31  5007

She went to church this morning - she took her car because our housemate wasn't ready to go when she was.  She had gotten a call from her son.  He and his family were driving down from Oxford for the day to visit with her and would be in town in time for lunch.

Mom didn't tag along when our housemate got the call to go met her family for lunch.  Instead, she stayed home and watched NFL - she's got the Sunday Night Football in America game on TV now.  That's the St. Louis Rams vs. Seattle Seahawks.  They say that the New Orleans Saints will travel to play whichever team wins this game next week.  Mom is pulling for the Rams as she likes Sam Bradford.

This is all I've got to share with you for now....

New Year's

Happy New Year everyone!  It turned into a rowdy New Year's Eve.  There was bad weather in Central Mississippi.  Mom and our housemate were gearing up for the possibility of tornadoes.  The TV weatherpeople were on talking about the bad weather and showing where it was and where it was headed.  Thankfully none materialized in our neighborhood.  All we got was heavy rain, thunder and lightning.  Mom and our housemate had to deal with a flooded garage, but they were happy that was all they had to do.

We went to bed before the midnight hour.  Mom got up around 7:15 AM and hung out at home all day. Our housemate went out to meet some friends for brunch.  Mom was invited but declined to go.  She wanted to watch the college bowl games - particularly Mississippi State vs. Michigan.  I know she's a LSU Tiger, but she also loves Mississippi State - as long as they're not playing LSU!

The weather improved today - the rain and storms cleared out of the state.  Mom says there were tornadoes in the Byram and Pearl areas.  They're south and east of Jackson.  I'm glad we don't live in those places.  I want nothing to do with tornadoes - as I've said before.

Good night!!
